Rooftop Waterproofing

Waverton, NSW

Construction Cost: $300k

March, 2023

The existing rooftop was covering in pebbles with ongoing leaks reported into the top level units. A new waterproofing system was installed on the rooftop as part of the remediation works to stop the water leaks into the units below.
Upon removal of the pebbles it was found that the rooftop ponds water in some areas at a depth of 50mm, resulting in the inability for the rain water to discharge from the rooftops. Where ponded water can over time cause the waterproofing membrane to deteriorate before its expended service life and cause leaks into the units below. It is generally expected that a rooftop has a flat slab or in best instances the rooftop slab is constructed correctly with falls to drainage (although very rarely has this been the case).
Another challenge on this project was following completion and testing of the newly installed membrane a leak into one of the top level units persisted. After further testing of the new membrane a minor pinhole was identified in one of the membrane laps which was easily and quickly fixed. This shows the importance of testing a new membrane once it is installed, as there are may variables and human error which can affect the installation process. Testing a new membrane following installation is key and should always be completed.
